Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) is the national and international voice of Canada’s largest post-secondary education network. Founded in 1972, CICan represents and supports publicly funded colleges, institutes, CEGEPs, and polytechnics across Canada, helping strengthen an education system that plays a vital role in building resilient communities, supporting employers, and preparing learners for the workforce.
CICan’s work is guided by the vision of building better futures for people and communities. Through its broad network, the organization helps provide Canadians with affordable, accessible, and high-quality education and training that leads to good-paying jobs, supports business growth, and drives innovation across key industries. With more than 95% of Canadians living within 50 km of a member institution, CICan’s network has a wide-reaching impact on students, employers, communities, and partners.
The organization works in several key areas, including advocacy, national and international partnerships, leadership development, mentorship, and bursaries. Through its programs, CICan connects Canadian institutions with partners around the world, helping transform post-secondary education and expand access to employment-based training and global skills. It has also supported education system development in more than 100 countries.
CICan is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion, sustainable development, access to quality education, decent work for all, and climate action. Its work is guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and it recognizes the important role of education in advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
As part of Team Canada, CICan champions the role of colleges and institutes in training the builders, growers, makers, caregivers, first responders, innovators, and job creators that communities depend on. Through its Roadmap to 2030, national partnerships, applied research initiatives, climate action resources, and skills training programs, CICan continues to support a stronger, more resilient Canada while contributing to education and workforce development globally.
